About Upcoming BMW M3 - BMW M3 sedan, 2022 Sure, its overdone, huge grille may be mocked, but when you row its delightful manual transmission or pursue its smooth six-cylinder to the redline, the aesthetic flaws fade away. Because rear-wheel drive and a stick shift are required, the basic 473-hp M3 is the purist's M3. If faster lap times are more essential, the Competition model comes with a 503 horsepower twin-turbo straight-six engine and a track-tuned chassis. It's only available with an automatic transmission, but it's the only way to have all-wheel drive. After the track day, the enraged Bimmer may be transformed back into a calm daily driver.

The newly available technology costs $4100 and is only compatible with the Competition model's automatic transmission. While this means the DIY six-speed gearbox isn't an option, BMW claims that adding AWD makes the M3 Comp faster than its rear-drive cousin. Plus, because this version of BMW's xDrive system has a "2WD" option for refining your Ken Block imitation, choosing for all-wheel traction doesn't mean losing sideways action. Responsible drivers, of course, will save such antics for the racetrack.

The M3 sedan, like the forthcoming M4 coupe, is powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine. 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque are sent to the rear wheels in the standard variant. Only a six-speed manual gearbox is available. The engine in the M3 Competition is even more potent, producing 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, but it's only available with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The M3 Comp comes standard with rear-wheel drive, but an all-wheel-drive system with a rear-drive mode is also available. Adaptive dampers and adjustable brake pedal feel are also included on every M3. The sedan may also be equipped with even more powerful carbon-ceramic brakes with gold-painted callipers.
