TVS Group was established by Thirukkurungudi Vengaram Sundaram Iyengar. After died of Sundaram Iyengar in 1955, his sons took the company ahead with several forays in the automobile industries including Finance, Insurance, two-wheeler manufacturer, tires and automobile parts.
TVS Group has managed 33 companies and its turnover nearly $3 billion.
The TVS Group Company has set up a plant at Hosur in 1978 to the manufacturing of mopeds. After join-venture between Sundaram Clayton Ltd and Suzuki Motor Corporation, the company has started commercial production of motorcycles in 1984.
TVS Suzuki Company manufactured several models such as Suzuki Samurai, Suzuki Shogun and Suzuki Fiero. In 2001, TVS Suzuki Company has renamed with TVS Motors.
Today, TVS Motors has grown to be the largest in the group in terms of size and turnover. TVS Motors have become India’s first 2-seater moped, the TVS 50CC. After the TVS 50CC, TVS Motors Company became the leader of its category of sub 100CC mopeds and sold 7 Million units. The Company also introduced TVS Scooty which is India’s 2nd largest brand in the scooterette segment.
In 2009, TVS launched TVS Jive and became India’s 1st Clutch-free motorbike in India. In 2012, TVS Motors has launched unisex scooter named, TVS Wego for easier handling.
In April 2013, BMW Motorrad and TVS Motor Company signed a co-operation agreement with the aim to develop motorcycles below 500 cubic centimetres. TVS Motors has won the Deming Application Prize in 2002.
In the same year, TVS Victor has won National Awards. Before this, TVS Scooty Pep won the “Outstanding Design Excellence Award” from the Business World magazine and National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.
