A SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) is a similar to a station wagon. It is generally equipped with 4-wheel drive for on and off-road ability. Some SUVs include a pickup truck with the passenger carrying space of a minivan or large sedan.
In North America, SUVs are considered as light trucks; share the same platform with pick-up trucks. The SUV term is not used in all countries. Outside North America “off-road vehicle”, “four-wheel drive” or “four-by-four” use of the brand name. Not all SUVs have 4-wheel drive capabilities, and not all four-wheel-drive passenger vehicles are SUVs.
In mid 2000, SUVs sales temporarily declined due to high oil prices. SUVs are known for its lighter weight and better fuel efficiency vehicles on road. SUVs were mostly two-door models, and were available with removable tops. In 2002, all full-size 2-door SUVs were gone from market. The Jeep Wrangler as a compact 2-door body style. In 2010, the number of 2-door SUV models increased with the release of the Range Rover Evoque and the Nissan Murano convertible.
SUVs are known for high ground clearance, upright, boxy body, and high H-point. Bodies of SUVs have recently become more aerodynamic. All Smaller SUVs are commonly built with less passenger space like Ford Escape, Jeep Compass, Honda CR-V, Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, Range Rover Evoque, Toyota RAV4, and Volvo XC60.
All full-size SUV vehicles are larger than Midsize SUVs and much larger than Compact SUVs. They have larger passenger space than midsize SUVs. Full Size SUVs are usually offer higher safety ratings. Some examples are; Chevrolet Suburban, Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada, Toyota Sequoia, Audi Q7, Lexus LX, and Buick Enclave.
SUVs became popular in United States, Canada, India and Australia in the 1990s and early-2000.
